Stockholm Bromma Airport: A Private Jet Traveler's Guide

Stockholm Bromma Airport: A Private Jet Traveler's Guide

Stockholm Bromma Airport (BMA) is Sweden's primary hub for business aviation. While Arlanda handles the bulk of commercial traffic for the Stockholm region, Bromma has long served as the preferred airport for private jet travel. Thanks to its proximity to the city, its dedicated business aviation infrastructure, and the operational efficiency that smaller, focused airports can offer.

If you are flying private to or from Stockholm, here is what to know about Bromma.

Location and Getting There

Bromma sits approximately 8 kilometres west of Stockholm city centre, closer than virtually any other airport-to-city pairing in Europe. From most central Stockholm locations, the drive takes 15 to 20 minutes outside of peak traffic. From the affluent inner-city districts of Östermalm, Vasastan, and Norrmalm, it is often closer to 10 minutes.

This proximity is part of why Bromma is preferred for private aviation. The time saved on ground transport frequently outweighs any operational difference between airports. If you live or work in central Stockholm, Bromma effectively brings the aircraft to you.

Airport Specifications

Bromma's key technical details:

•  ICAO code: ESSB

•  IATA code: BMA

•  Single runway: 1,668 metres (12/30)

•  Elevation: 47 metres (154 feet)

•  Coordinates: 59.354 N, 17.942 E

The runway length accommodates the majority of light and mid-size jets used for European charter. Heavy jets and ultra-long-range aircraft typically operate from Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), which has both longer runways and the ground handling infrastructure for larger aircraft.

Operating Hours and the Noise Curfew

Bromma operates within strict environmental restrictions. The airport is open daily from 06:00 to 22:00 local time. Departures and arrivals outside these hours are not permitted except in exceptional circumstances (medical emergencies, for example).

This curfew matters for trip planning. If you need a late-night arrival into Stockholm or an early-morning departure outside the curfew window, Arlanda is the alternative. Most experienced charter brokers will flag this constraint at the planning stage.

FBO Services and the Private Terminal

Bromma has a dedicated FBO (Fixed-Base Operator) facility for general and business aviation. This is what gives private jet travel its characteristic ease at smaller airports: you arrive at a private terminal, walk past a small reception area, and proceed directly to your aircraft. There is no commercial check-in, no main terminal queue, and security processing is conducted privately.

Standard FBO services at Bromma include:

•  Private lounges for passengers and crew

•  Ground handling and ramp services

•  Fuelling (Jet A-1)

•  Customs and immigration processing for international flights

•  Direct ramp access for vehicle transfers

For most clients, the entire process from arriving at the FBO to wheels-up takes 15 to 20 minutes. The contrast with commercial aviation is one of the more tangible benefits of flying private.

International Arrivals

Bromma is a customs airport, which means international flights can arrive and depart directly without needing to clear customs at another airport first. For passengers arriving from outside the Schengen Area, customs and immigration are processed at the FBO with minimal delay, typically alongside the aircraft, rather than in a separate facility.

Aircraft Hangaring at Bromma

Several operators and a small number of brokers maintain hangars at Bromma. Hangared aircraft can be moved to the ramp on short notice, which materially affects how quickly a trip can be arranged. For clients flying frequently from Stockholm, working with a charter provider that has a physical presence at Bromma offers a practical advantage.

Bluelink operates from our own hangar at Bromma. It is where our team coordinates flights and where we maintain working relationships with the FBO and ground handlers we rely on every day.

Practical Tips for Travelers

•  Aim to arrive at the FBO 20 to 30 minutes before scheduled departure. There is no benefit to arriving earlier.

•  For international departures, your account manager or broker should confirm that all documentation (passports, visas, customs declarations) is in order before you arrive.

•  If you are connecting to ground transport at the destination, confirm whether the receiving airport is also a private aviation airport — some require longer transfer windows due to taxi distances.

•  Bromma's noise curfew applies even when scheduling shifts. If your trip timing changes, your flight may need to depart from Arlanda instead.

When Bromma Is the Right Choice

For most European routes from Stockholm: London, Paris, Geneva, Nice, Munich, Zurich, and similar destinations, Bromma is almost always preferable to Arlanda. The combination of proximity, efficiency, and dedicated private aviation infrastructure makes it the default for clients flying within standard operating hours.

For longer-range flights, larger aircraft, or trips outside the 06:00–22:00 window, Arlanda becomes the appropriate choice. A good charter broker will recommend the right airport for your specific trip rather than defaulting to one or the other.
